Hygiene

Dental hygiene plays an important role in maintaining a healthy smile. Gum disease is one of the main causes of tooth loss but can be prevented with a good oral hygiene regime.

Our hygienists can discuss brushing and flossing techniques as well as giving you a professional cleaning of your teeth, known as scaling and polishing. We recommend patients to see the hygienist once every six months to keep your gums clean and healthy and your breath smelling sweet.

If a patient already has existing dental implants we would recommend a three monthly maintenance regimen with a hygienist to prevent peri- implantitis or mucositis

Prevention

Here at Abbey Dental we believe it is essential to include preventative advice and treatment for all patients. Our aim is to avoid the traditional pattern of fillings and extractions.

By working together with the dentist and hygienist we can work out a maintenance plan to keep your teeth and gums healthy. This can be applied to both children and adults in a wide range of options including:

  • tooth brushing instruction
  • Oral hygiene instruction
  • Diet advice
  • Fluoride application
  • Fissure sealants
  • Mouth guards
  • Smoking cessation

Prevention is always better than cure and will limit the amount of dentistry needed long term.

This patient was very conscious about his stained teeth but thanks to a new treatment called ICON, we were able to remove the stains without local anaesthetic or drilling. The treatment took just 15 minutes.
